Tianyi Ge Museum (Tianyi Pavilion) is a National first-grade museum of China ( the highest classification for museums in China, as determined by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage) in Ningbo City.
Built in the Ming Dynasty, with history of nearly 460 years Tianyi Pavilion (天一阁) is the oldest private library in all of Asia and among the oldest in the world.
Located on the west bank of Moon Lake Tianyi Pavilion is a Chinese National Heritage Site that involves in its totality not only a pavilion, but a library, museum, garden, and several decorative halls that celebrate China's culture.
Built between 1561 and 1566 by Fan Qin, a former Ming Dynasty Minister of War, its name derives from the Book of Changes ("Yi Jing"), meaning "Water is the First of All Elements," symbolizing protection against fire. Its distinctive six-room structure and the "Tianyi Pool" reflect ancient architectural wisdom.
The Painting and Calligraphy Hall occasionally displays several historical masterpieces and exceptional works by renowned scholars. The museum is also home to the Mahjong Gallery, where you can learn about the origins and development of Mahjong.
This pavilion has become an icon symbolic of the city of Ningbo in which it is located and a frequently visited tourist destination.
